Students enrolled in Birchwood Middle School’s Marine Tech program recently built an Optimaster 310 sailboat from plans and an instructional manual provided by Brazilian architect, author, and boat builder Eduardo Marcondes. The Optimaster’s hull was built using Basalt Twill Fabric and Basalt Woven Tape.

Funding for this project was provided by RIDE (The Rhode Island Department of Education) with a Career Awareness grant obtained by City Sail Inc., a non-profit organization affiliated with the Marine Tech program from its inception. Mr. Richard Torti, Marine Tech instructor and Mr. Henry Marciano Director of City Sail Inc., and Founder of the North Providence School District’s Marine Tech program combined their boat building skills to instruct students how to build this unique sailboat.
