Devine Escapes used basalt rebar to reinforce the concrete foundation of a dry stone sculpture: Stacked Stone Garden Sphere. “…like any sculptor or dedicated craftsman, I wish for my works to last. For this reason, basalt rebar was used to reinforce the concrete foundation.”

“Since it (basalt rebar) is so much stronger than steel, we were able to go with a smaller size rebar than the engineering specs called for. Even for it’s small size (I believe it was 3/8th inch diameter) it was noticeably lighter than steel of the same size. Easier to cut than steel–but harder to bend. The stuff is strong.”
