The ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) announced that its composite materials committee have developed a new standard specification (ASTM D8505/D8505M-23) for the latest generation of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rebar which includes Basalt (BFRP) rebar.

It’s been a long time coming; the process of creating the specification for FRP rebar began in the mid-2000’s – finally!

Our basalt rebars have validated research and data to back up the claims for this acceptance and our basalt rebar meets and exceeds these standards.

What this means is engineers can now safely and reliably stamp designs to offer a reinforcement that will increase the modulus. The reinforced concrete section design becomes significantly more efficient. More competitive with traditional materials such as steel reinforced concrete.

There’s been a push from several DOTs to have FRP reinforcement products with higher modulus and therefore higher strength. So they can use them in structural applications and designs that otherwise wouldn’t be as feasible. Now they have them and we can look forward to longer lasting, stronger, and much lighter structures. Structures with a far better carbon footprint can now be constructed.

With a specification of a higher grade, and a higher modulus defined from the beginning, the contractor can leverage many benefits at the construction site.

  • Basalt rebar is lighter than steel making it easier to work with. Significantly reduces shipping costs (150 x 20ft sticks #4 steel = 500 x 20ft sticks #4 basalt)
  • Basalt rebar up to 10mm diameter (#3) is available in 300ft coils. Less ties, time and labor mean better profits.
  • Basalt rebar cuts easily on the work site and does not create sparks like steel. Reduces fire hazards.
  • Basalt rebar cuts cleanly, no sharp ends to cut workers.
  • Basalt rebar does not rust like steel. Moisture penetration from concrete does not spall. Less concrete needed to cover, reducing costs
  • Basalt rebar does not corrode like steel, making it ideal for marine environments and chemical plants
  • Basalt rebar is stronger and longer lasting. Less downtime for traffic and repairs. Over time saving our country billions of dollars.
